Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano have announced an Angel’s Egg 4K remaster, to celebrate the forgotten classic anime movie’s 40th anniversary.
The new Angel’s Egg 4K remaster is being produced with direct supervision from Oshii, who directed the film and produced the original story and script alongside Amano who made the original concept and handled art direction.
This new Angel’s Egg 4K remaster is being made by scanning the original 35mm film negatives and remastering each frame into 4K using the latest technology, with Oshii overseeing the entire process with his approval. Here’s some more stills from the announcement:
Originally produced by Studio Deen and released back in 1985 as an original video animation (OVA), Angel’s Egg featured both Oshii and Amano in one of their earliest projects, both of whom got their start working at Tatsunoko Productions together.
Though it wasn’t as influential as Oshii’s other anime work like his Ghost in the Shell film or Amano’s work on Final Fantasy, its incredible visuals and overwhelming world design made Angel’s Egg a cult classic.
Angel’s Egg features a bleak and somewhat primordial world rife with fantastical images and otherworldly concepts. The film generally only follows two main characters: a young girl who protects the egg (voiced by Mako Hyōdō), and a young man carrying a large cross-shaped object (voiced by Jinpachi Nezu).
