Microsoft is considering in-game ads for free to play games

A new report is claiming Microsoft is considering in-game ads for free to play games.

The new report (via Business Insider) that Microsoft is considering in-game ads for free to play games cites multiple sources with knowledge of the plans.

Reportedly, Microsoft is looking to roll out advertising with selected brands and wouldn’t take a cut, at least initially. Microsoft is reportedly looking to include ads from only those selected brands to avoid distracting players.

As with the infamous 2008 Barack Obama advertisements in the original Burnout Paradise release, the goal here would reportedly be the same – advertising real-world brands in video games.

It’s worth noting Microsoft acquired the very same advertising firm that facilitated those Obama ads in Burnout Paradise, Massive Inc., for a sum estimated between $200 and $400 million back in 2006. Massive Inc.’s in-game advertising didn’t really take off, though, and Microsoft shut them down in 2010.

As with any rumor – take this with a grain of salt, but we’ll keep you guys posted.
