New Evangelion Guidelines Prohibit Fan-Created Hentai and More

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Studio Khara, the animation studio founded by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno has released new guidelines for fan-created works.

The new guidelines which were released on December 28th on Studio Khara’s official blog list our unacceptable forms of fan works when using the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. The new guidelines come shortly after a collaboration event with art-hosting site Pixiv was announced.

The guidelines are explicitly for those creating Evangelion fan works free of charge, meaning fanart released for free. The guidelines will speculatively be enforced on mainstream sites such as Pixiv and YouTube.

It’s unknown if this excludes things like hentai doujinshi at fan conventions. As such it’s possible that commercial fan works including hentai could be permitted; however the guidelines are unclear.

You can read some of the new guidelines for fan works based on Neon Genesis Evangelion below.

Please refrain from publishing creative works with the following expressions and contents.

Those that aim to hurt the feelings, honor, or ideas of this work or others.
That which excessively promotes or demeans a specific politics, religion, or belief.
Excessively violent or grotesque material
Pornographic material that is intended to be pornographic.
Other anti-social expressions
Those that infringe on the rights of others.
Those that may be misconstrued as official works. 5.
Please observe the following rules when posting material that uses part of an official work (audio, video, still images, text, etc.) as material.

The guidelines are a stark departure from the usual symbiotic relationship of fanworks and official publishers. Fan doujinshi (self-published works) are a common sight at conventions in Japan, including the internationally famous Comiket.

While the official English blog for Studio Khara directs readers to the Japanese guidelines, an official translation for the new Neon Genesis Evangelion guidelines has not been released.
