Take-Two considering more film adaptation, but are cautious

Take-Two

Take-Two already has a couple of movie adaptations based on their properties coming up with Borderlands and Bioshock.

While those aren’t out yet, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed during the company’s quarterly earnings call that they are “discussing” more adaptations.

However, he also stated they were being “very selective” on the matter, indicating that there is massive risk involved for Take-Two to put one of their IPs on the line for the sake of a movie.

“If we were willing to use the company’s balance sheet to make a movie or a television show, then in the event of great success we would benefit from it,” Zelnick said. “But we’re not prepared to use the company’s balance sheet that way because the risk/reward profile is unappealing to us.”

He also stated the “hit ratio” for films was much lower compared to that of console games. Where as the success rate for good game developers is in the 80s and 90s, film studios only see a “hit ratio” of roughly 30%.

It remains to be seen how much further Take-Two decide to take their films to. However, it’s likely those plans hinge on the success of the upcoming Borderlands and Bioshock adaptation, the former of which is expected to release August 9, 2024.
